2010 In Review: Part 3

Part 3, our final part in our review of 2010 looks back at the best full releases from the year. An album or full release has a special place in my heart. It’s a way for a musician to be able to tell a story which can’t be done in 3mins. It provides the foundation for a total body of work and allows an artist to take risks where they might not always be able to.

Top 10 Albums Of The Year

10.   LCD Soundsystem – This Is Happening

On This Is Happening, Murphy once again shows off his encyclopedic knowledge of all things post-punk and zip-tight. With Hit tracks, I Can Change, Drunk Girls and Somebody’s Calling Ce this album has been another extremely strong and fun record from LCD Soundsystem.

9.        Sufjan Stevens – The Age Of Adz

The eighth studio album from Sufjan is The Age Of Adz, his best work since Illinois.  Banjos are out; moody electronics, deep bass, and drums that burst like geysers are in.

7.        Miami Horror – Illumination

After years in the making, here at last is Illumination, the fully realised debut from Melbourne’s favourite psychedelic indie-electronic adventureers Miami Horror. The Album itself is an interesting mix of genres, breaking up into almost 3 styles through out the 48mins. The real highlights of this album are the already released singles, I Look To You, Moon Theory, Sometimes and Infinite Canyons.

5.       Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

It certainly en-captures everything, the title that is. A Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Beautiful production, Dark themes, Twisted lyrics and a Fantasy out of this world. Kanye West’s new album has certainly left behind the record label restrictions of his early career. He may be an egodick, but he’s pushing the boundaries and in my book that’s what it’s all about.

4.        Kele – The Boxer

Even though this album seems quite self centred and confused, it’s themes and it’s subject seem to bring everything together with a complex new sound. What seems like a nineties rock album masked by waves of electorinca, The Boxer is a a short but pleasant ride down the mind track of Kele Orkale.

3.        Angus & Julia Stone – Down The Way

There is something so unbelievably sweet about this album; I can almost feel the sugar-rush pumping through my veins from over indulging. What really stands out about this album is the seemingly effortless composition of the tracks. There is such a wonderful balance of all the elements, instruments, vocals and lyrics.  It is a pleasure to listen to.

2.        Bag Raiders – Bag Raiders

This quite short album of only 38mins still holds it’s own as a full length debut with enough of a change in sound to warrant many of it’s already released singles. Each track on this album feels like they are totally separate from one another, in both sound and pace. But when brought together a whole new world of transparent dance is created with simplified brilliance.

1.        Kelis – Fleshtone

A continuous mix of modern and progressive dance, Kelis leaves her old style and sound in the past. After a having a baby and going through a messy divorce, the Milkshake singer has written a break-up record with a difference. Staying away from the simple ‘I hate you’ and ‘You’re a dickhead’ songs, Kelis captures a maturity and confidence which simply tells you, I’m standing tall and moving on.
